We have a quality second hand store nearby to us - actually it is a chain throughout the US and Canada and a few times a year they offer 50% off the regular cost of things. So today is one of those days and I thought I would wander down to have a look see. Well talk about busy. Every man and his dog was there (not literally as no pets are allowed) but I managed to find what I was looking for.
To give you an idea - kids jeans are normally $5.99 and tops for women are around the $7.99 mark. Well today I spent a whopping $43 on 16 items. Most were for my daughter of course as she is growing up and out at a rapid rate and I find we are consistently struggling with jeans to fit. Also not to mention she has to wear red to support her school team each day during the winter olympics so I had to pick up a couple more red tops as it is a not a colour which features heavily in her wardrobe.
I can definitely say that it was a fun trip. It was nice to get out and browse (and shop) without feeling guilty about what I spent. _________________ http://penmanship.weebly.com/ |

I actually did buy a couple of little blue things but as he isn't currently the priority I didn't want to go overboard!!
I recall buying all sorts of new things for my daughter when she is born but realised quickly that it can soon become a big waste of money as they are in things for such a short period of time.
Years ago I wouldn't have even thought about shopping in a second hand store but it is funny how your attitude changes when you have kids. _________________ http://penmanship.weebly.com/ |

Bargain! I would have no hesitation in buying good quality 2nd hand kids clothes if I had children. They grow out of things so quickly. _________________ Many blessings,

Wow...awesome bargains Michelle!! I would love to have that option close by
The trouble I have is finding good quality second hand shops here!! There are quite a few around but the large ones are FULL of garbage, that you just wouldn't buy. There is a really good small smith family store near us, they have good clothes, but some are way overpriced.
I have no hesitation in buying second hand clothes off ebay, but unfortunately they can sometimes be nearly as expensive as new once you add the postage.
For the kids I have taken to buying a season ahead (when I can) from the big department stores have their clearance sales. For example, Target just cleared all their summer clothes so I bought the kids 11 outfits for next summer (21 pieces all up) and I spent $90, but the full retail would have been $280. _________________ Carolyn

Yes good quality second hand stores can be hard to come by. And I too enjoy browsing Ebay for second hand stuff although if I do that - it tends to be more for specialised brands as I love the baby Next stuff from UK.
The store I went to is not your traditional St Vinnies or anything like that - it is as large as a huge supermarket with all the sections neatly laid out in sizes and colours so it makes it easy to shop and browse. Everything from homewares to childrens toys, books, clothing, jewellery - you name it - they seem to have it!
$90 is great for that many items Carolyn - well done!! _________________ http://penmanship.weebly.com/ |

Wow, Michelle, what a bargain!
There was a time where I wouldn't be seen dead walking into a second hand store. (Must have been a bit of a snob back then! lol) But, have since wised up as there are some great second hand clothing stores around and as already mentioned, you just need to spend some time finding the right ones.
Sounds like you've hit the jackpot with your store. _________________ Cheers Jenni |

Sounds like a wonderful shop Michelle. You got great bargains didn't you.
I've also found that some of the Op Shops are too expensive with some things. Considering where I live, close to so many Asian shops, I can buy everyday clothing for about the same price. It's that long since I've been to a bit shopping centre to look at Target prices etc I wouldn't even know what they charge anyway. _________________ “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.”

It does sound fantastic!!!
I know when we were there back in '99, my girlfriend took us to a few shopping malls, and it was great to see how they do it on the other side of the globe.
While we didn't go to a 2nd hand store, I can fully admit to falling in love with CostCo! Loved it. _________________ Chantal
